The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s National Capital Chapter kicked off the fall social season with the 35th Annual Ambassadors Ball on September 11, 2013 at the JW Marriot in Washington, DC and for the fifth year in a row Diplomatic Courier was proud to be the evening’s media partner.

The evening welcomed newly-assigned Ambassadors and their spouses to the city and honored the Washington Diplomatic Corps for their support of charitable activities and humanitarian endeavors.

This year’s Ambassadors Ball raised nearly $850,000, contributing to the more than $18 million that the event has raised throughout its history. Funds raised will continue to move research forward to identify the cause of and cure for multiple sclerosis, a disease that affects 400,000 Americans and 2.5 million people worldwide. Donations also support local programs and services for those affected by MS in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

In addition to corporate sponsors and table buyers, guests contributed to the cause by bidding in a unique internationally-themed silent auction which included rare and priceless items, many of which were donated by the Diplomatic Corps. Popular items included opportunities to dine with Ambassadors at their embassies, exotic getaways, native food and wine, cultural experiences, and jewelry.

The 2013 co-chairs were Mrs. Terese Casey, wife of Senator Robert Casey of Pennsylvania, and Mrs. Mylene Walden, wife of Congressman Greg Walden of Oregon. Honors were given to Multiple Sclerosis Congressional Caucus Founding Co-Chair Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina and current Co-Chair Congressman Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, as well as Former United States Chief of Protocol Ambassador Capricia Penavic Marshall.
