In Mali, women represent approximately 10 percent of the national parliament. In March 2012, a military coup deposed President Amadou Toumani Touré and plunged the country, into political turmoil. Amidst the conflict, women faced human rights abuses and many were displaced from their home. Despite these challenges, women continue to identify avenues to increase their participation in politics, including the 2014 municipal elections. Robichaud Assétou Sangaré is the secretary general of the Yelema political party and for a decade has worked to increase women’s participation in politics at the local level. Assétou Sangaré recently conducted 13 workshops and public forums to ensure women had the technical skills to actively participate in electoral processes and understand their rights. As a respected leader of her party, Assétou Sangar ran for a seat in parliament and served as a campaign manager.
