The European-American Cultural Foundation launched with a spectacular evening at the Library of Congress on October 8th. The Foundation works to strengthen cultural bonds and collaboration between the European Union and EU Member states and the United States, reflective of their profound historical relationship and affinity. The October 8th evening was dedicated at taking the first step in fulfilling the mission. Among those in attendance were Kimberly Heatherington, Executive Director of E-ACF, and Susan C. Lehrman, Founding Board Member.
Ambassador Joâo Vale de Almeida, who until recently served as the Head of the European Union Delegation to the United States, gave the keynote address. In his remarks, Ambassador Almeida stressed the importance of culture stating that: “Culture is the tie that binds people and countries.” He went to emphasize the Foundation’s role in the promotion of culture by stating that E-ACF would: “enlarge the possibilities for cultural interaction between Europeans and Americans.”
Next to speak was Susan C. Lehrman, who focused on the impact E-ACF would have on future generations. She believes that the E-ACF will influence younger generations to “understand and accept different cultures and backgrounds.” She hopes that the E-ACF will lead to tolerance of different cultures and the evisceration of stereotypes. Kimberly Heatherington echoed Ambassador Almeida’s sentiments by stressing the imperative nature of culture. She discussed cultural relations by saying: “Culture, the arts, and dialogue are not optional extra—they are essential elements of expression and exchange, and they influence almost every sector of society.” Heatherington and the E-ACF hope to facilitate cultural exchange to promote deeper understanding of the shared history and future of the European Union and the United States.
The E-ACF hopes to achieve its mission by facilitating programs such as performing art festivals, special events, lectures, and other forms of cultural exchange. Upcoming events hosted by the E-ACF include a Kids Euro Festival, the largest children’s performing arts festival in the United States, and the European Month of Culture, a month-long festival of almost 100 events. The E-ACF promotes these events to engage the population to share culture. The founding board members of E-ACF are Douglas Charnas, Bart Gordon, and Susan C. Lehrman.
