Stifling summer that just let the mellow season fall in Washington needed some cool jazz. September unfortunately saw the ugly utterances from Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte.  German diplomacy provided some guiding light and leadership with a thought provoking exhibit - From Albert Einstein to Leo Baeck - German Jews in the Early 20th Century – at Ambassador Peter Wittig’s residence. His Excellency is a german_embassy_september_2016thoughtful law professor who has the experience and the gravitas to drive the message of tolerance and hope. Quite diplomacy won the day for humanity and for the decent people of the Philippines as Mr. Duterte ate his words. Though, with mercurial personalities like Duterte and a certain US Presidential candidate, one can never tell what they will do next. Germany is also leading the way to unite people of faith through one of the most creative ways. House of One – a structure that is to become a home for the world’s three major monotheistic religions: Christianity, Islam and Judaism. singapore_national_dayCoarse language is an indication of the world in troubled waters where security and shared prosperity require moored relations. Singapore Embassy celebrated the 51st National Day and half a century of friendship with US with grace and gusto. Wow!! Seeing George Porter’s book chronicling the 60s tells an inspirational story of how far the country has come. Soft spoken Ambassador Ashok Kumar Mirpuri assisted by Deputy Chief of Mission Ms. Jolene TAN knows how Washington works and how to keep the friendly relations between two allies strong and vibrant. Opposite to antipathy and discord are the sweet sounds of harmony played by a international-student-housing-9-9-16-071promising young artist Laylo Rikhsieva from Tashkent, Uzbekistan – brought to Washington for a special concert at the International Students House by the Embassy Series. Students of history might recall that half a century ago during the height of the Cold War Soviet diplomacy brought two warring nations together through the Tashkent Agreement. Optimism always promises that there's light at the end of the tunnel. Switzerland's ambassador_martin_dahinden_and_dr_renzo_simonimodern engineering wonder 35 kilometers long Gotthard base tunnel proves that optimism with hard work, discipline and Swiss time is no pipe dream. Pessimists can have a look at the Instagram pictures of the Swiss Soirée or just talk to Ambassador Martin Dahinden and Dr. Renzo Simoni - the recipient of this year's Tell Award. They will find out that Switzerland is much more than the mythical Swiss Family Robinson and Swiss cheese.  The Gotthard Base Tunnel was a massive 17 year project and it was accomplished with minimal environmental impact and loss of life or injuries. atlantic_council_discussion_sept_14_2016The Atlantic Council presented Portugal’s Minister of the Sea Ms. Ana Paulo Vitorino – who visited the United States as a guest of US Secretary of State for “Our Ocean” Conference – which according to the U.S. Department of State is focusing “on the key ocean issues of our time – marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate-related impacts on the ocean.” Minister Vitorino presented areas of strategic cooperation between Portugal and US - which included Liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade, Ocean energy, Methane hydrates and Deep-sea mining. “Live and Help Live” is the motto of the Edhi Foundation started by young immigrant during the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. His mother would give him two pennies every day; one for his expense and the second to salma_hasan_ali_with_edhidistribute to the most deserving poor. When he could not find any help for his ailing mother he devoted his life for a worthy caused that led to the creation of the world’s largest private ambulance service. It was interesting to hear some World Bank Executive Director Nasir Khosa, Vice-President Annette Dixon, former Pakistan Central Bank Chief & Woodrow Wilson Center Fellow Dr. Ishrat Husain, Ms. Salma Hasan Ali a gifted story teller talk and Pakistan’s Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani talk the towering accomplishments of Abdus Sattar Edhi – dubbed as the Richest Poor Man and the Messiah of Karachi – who did not even have a high school diploma. After the summer break, legislators were busy on the Capitol Hill voting to fund the Government and averting another nasty shutdown. Between the castings of the votes, Leader Nancy Pelosi stopped by during a private dinner held in honor of Congressman André Carson. A particularly delightful experience from the dinner conversation was to hear Leader Pelosi speak with pride and joy the visit to Italy and meetings with governmental counterparts along with her young protégé. Her eyes sparkled and her face radiated with joy while talking about attending the 800th Anniversary of the Pardon of Assisi with a member of the House Intelligence Committee who also happened to be a Muslim.
