For the past ten years the DC Shorts Film Festival has brought the world’s top short films to audiences in and around Washington, DC. In its first year the festival screened a few dozen films and lasted only two days; ten years later, it has become the largest shorts film festival on the east coast, screening over 150 films and lasting 11 days.

One of the festivals most important goals has been to showcase films from around the world, leading to the current 23 nations that have submitted films in the festival this year. This year, a large focus has been put on Russia, and subsequently the festival is home to the country’s largest collection of short films by emerging Russian filmmakers. Jon Gann, the festival's founder and director, recently explained at a press conference the importance to bring different countries together and promoting free thought. While discussing Russia he stated, “I am abhorred of the policies and of what is currently going on in Russia right now, but it is the government’s fault, not the filmmakers.” He further explained that the festival is committed to promoting free thought and expression.

This year’s screening will consist of 17 showcases and 98 screenings being shown in six different theaters in and around the DC area. The 154 films range from 1 minute to 26 minutes in length, and will be shown in 90 minute segments. Drama is the largest represented genre followed closely by comedy, but viewers will also be treated to animation, documentary, and experimental films as well. There will be one family friendly showcase shown during the festival recommended for ages 8 and up. Unsuitable content for children will often make an appearance in other showcases and are not recommended for a family outing.

The festival goes from September 19th to the 29th this year, and if you are looking to view and support local and foreign filmmakers then this is the place you need to be. Visit their website for more details.
