Elder Gerrit W. Gong is a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a senior governing body in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He oversees the Church’s Artificial Intelligence Working Group and is an international voice championing a morally grounded approach to AI.

Dr. Gong holds PhD and MPhil degrees from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He researched and taught at Oxford, Johns Hopkins (School of Advanced International Studies), and Brigham Young Universities. For twenty years at the US Department of State and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C., Dr. Gong worked with governments, multinational companies, nongovernmental organizations, and research institutes across the world. 

Gerrit W. Gong was born and raised in Palo Alto, California. Married for 46 years, he and his wife love their children and grandchildren.
